It’s the name given to what it was considered as an autonomous kingdom within the Viceroyalty of New Spain and which used to include the current territories of Jalisco, Nayarit, Colima, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas y some parts of San Luis Potosí and Durango.
The conquest of this territory was accomplished by Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán who imposed the name “Conquest of the Holy Spirit of the Great Spain” (“Conquista del Espíritu Santo de la Mayor España”) to the explored and conquered territories by him. However, the queen Joanna I of Castile, Charles V’s mother, who governed in the absence of the emperor, was not pleased with such name and therefore she ordered, by Royal Decree in Ocaña, Spain on January 25th, 1531 that the conquered territory be named as “Kingdom of the New Galicia” instead, and that shall be founded a city with the name of “Santiago de Galicia de Compostela” as its capital city. The first capital city was established in Compostela, in the current State of Nayarit.
In 1549, the kingdom was awarded with legal personality and was known as “Royal Audience and Chancellery of the New Galicia”, which used to be totally independent from the one of Mexico. Finally, in the city of Guadalajara was established a diocese that worked as an aid for the Archdiocese of Mexico.
When the political divisions of the territories of the New Spain were changed in the times of the Spanish king Charles III, the New Galicia became into the “Intendencia de Guadalajara”. Once the independence war of Mexico was consummated, the Constitution of 1824 created the State of Jalisco over the territories of Jalisco, Nayarit, Colima, and some parts of Zacatecas.
